Activists Rally Worldwide for Kanu’s Release and Justice

Global activism for the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has intensified, with coordinated campaigns and rallies spanning major cities and diplomatic outposts.

On Wednesday, members of the Concerned Indigenous People of Biafra and Peaceful Global Awareness Campaigners for Justice and Freedom converged on Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, launching a protest that drew international attention.

The demonstrators bore placards condemning the “unlawful detention and torture” of Kanu, whose extradition from Kenya in June 2021 continues to spark worldwide controversy over alleged violations of international law and human rights.

Central to the action was the delivery of a comprehensive petition, dated November 12, 2025, signed by coalition leader Adindu Nkem. The urgent appeal–addressed to the United Nations, European Union, the United States, British High Commission, several embassies, and the International Criminal Court–calls for immediate intervention in Kanu’s plight.

The letter details ongoing concerns about Kanu’s deteriorating health inside DSS custody and cites multiple disregarded rulings from Nigerian courts and global human rights bodies, including the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which had ordered his unconditional release.

Activists argue that the circumstances of Kanu’s abduction from Kenya and his continued solitary confinement in Nigeria constitute state-sponsored terrorism, extrajudicial persecution, and systematic attacks on human rights. The petition urges world leaders not only to enforce court orders and support Kanu’s immediate release, but to begin investigations into those responsible for his abduction and alleged torture.

The coalition called on the international community to classify Nigeria as a terrorist state due to persistent extrajudicial killings, unlawful detentions, and suppression of peaceful movements. They pressed for the expansion of ICC investigations into crimes against humanity and transnational terrorism in Nigeria, including targeted sanctions against implicated state officials.

As international attention mounts, the activists’ appeals reflect deepening global concern over human rights in Nigeria, pushing for accountability and urging swift humanitarian and diplomatic action.
