Blaze Destroys Hundreds of Shops in Kano’s Shuwaki Market
A major fire outbreak tore through Shuwaki Market in Gari Local Government Area of Kano State, leaving hundreds of traders devastated following the destruction of 529 temporary stalls. The Kano State Fire Service, through its Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident to journalists, detailing how the blaze erupted and rapidly spread across the market, which reportedly comprises about 1,000 stalls within a sprawling area of approximately 3,000 by 2,500 feet.
Official reports indicate that the alarm was raised at about 3:25 p.m. by Abdulmalik Muhammad of Gari Fire Station, prompting an immediate response from fire service personnel. Swift action from the Kano Fire Service, including deployment of fire-fighting teams and vehicles, helped to contain the inferno and prevent its extension to other sectors of the market. Despite the extensive destruction of property and goods, Abdullahi reassured the public that there were no casualties or loss of life.
Preliminary investigations by the fire service have attributed the incident to reckless activities of some intoxicated individuals who reside within the market premises. The blaze devastated over half of the market’s temporary stalls, with affected traders now facing significant financial challenges after losing livelihoods and merchandise critical to their businesses.
Authorities have since urged traders and local residents to exercise greater caution when handling fire or storage of flammable materials within crowded market environments. The Kano State Fire Service emphasizes the importance of preventive measures, including heightened awareness and vigilance, to reduce the recurring risk of fire outbreaks in public markets.
The incident has sparked concern among community members, market leaders, and local government officials, raising fresh discussions about the need for improved fire safety infrastructure and stricter regulation of informal market activities in Kano State.
