Daura, Katsina State Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has been laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, following a solemn and dignified burial ceremony conducted with full national and military honours.
The funeral rites, held on Sunday, adhered to Islamic traditions, beginning with Janazah prayers offered at a nearby open prayer ground. His body was later interred in the courtyard of his private residence in Daura.
The atmosphere was somber as military pallbearers, dressed in ceremonial uniform, wheeled the flag-draped coffin adorned in Nigeria’s iconic green-white-green colours to the graveside. A military band played a final tribute, followed by gun salutes to honour the life and service of the late leader.
Prominent dignitaries in attendance included President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State, top government officials, traditional rulers, political leaders, and scores of mourners from across the nation.
President Buhari, a former military Head of State (1983–1985) and later a two-term democratically elected President (2015–2023), left a legacy that continues to shape Nigeria’s political discourse. His remains were flown from London to Katsina and received at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport before being escorted under tight security to his final resting place.
The funeral marks the end of an era for a man whose leadership spanned both military and democratic systems, and whose influence was felt both within and outside the country.
