Sam Onuigbo commends president’s economic reforms while endorsing second term ambitions
Former House of Representatives member Sam Onuigbo has publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office, citing the administration’s economic reforms and democratic credentials.
Onuigbo, who represented Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency of Abia State in the National Assembly, made the endorsement amid ongoing political realignments in the Southeast region.
The ex-lawmaker particularly praised Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah’s recent decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a strategic move that aligns with national development priorities. Governor Mbah officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling APC earlier this week, bringing his entire cabinet along with him.
Onuigbo commended Tinubu for working tirelessly to establish successive democratic governments at both state and federal levels, noting that the president “worked for the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari and some state governors and patiently waited till 2023 to ascend the presidency.”
The former federal legislator urged the Southeast region and Nigerians generally to ensure continuity by supporting Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. He expressed satisfaction with the president’s economic reforms, describing them as having “enduring and long term effects.”
Governor Mbah’s defection to APC has generated significant political discussion in Enugu State and the broader Southeast region. The governor recently revealed that he “fell in love with President Tinubu” when the president announced the removal of fuel subsidy and unified the exchange rate, describing these policies as bold economic reforms.
The political development comes as various stakeholders in Enugu State have been positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections, with multiple groups already endorsing Governor Mbah for a second term in office.
Onuigbo’s endorsement adds to growing voices within the Southeast calling for continued support of the Tinubu administration, reflecting evolving political dynamics in a region traditionally dominated by opposition parties.
