The representative for the Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Seriake Dickson, has expressed his support for the reinstatement of his fellow senator from Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, to the Senate.
It is important to recall that Natasha was suspended on March 6 following a dispute with Senate leadership regarding a new seating arrangement, which she argued was purposefully created to undermine her position.
The situation escalated when she made accusations on national television, alleging that Senate President Godswill Akpabio was retaliating against her for supposedly rejecting his sexual advances; a claim that Akpabio has denied.
In a related development, Justice Binta Nyako from the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered on July 4 that the Senate must reinstate Natasha.
While speaking to reporters, Senator Dickson stated that he opposed her suspension and hopes she will return to fulfill her duties in the Senate as soon as possible.
“I empathize with Natasha. I have always opposed any legislative measure that results in the prolonged suspension of members.
“The Senate leadership and my colleagues are aware that my stance on this matter is based on legal principles, constitutional obligations, and my personal beliefs. Senators are meant to engage in discussions and disagreements for the sake of the nation’s interests.
“Therefore, we must learn to tolerate and show respect to one another, even when we have differing opinions. Although I was not present when the announcement was made, that does not concern me.
“My primary focus is that she resumes her position promptly to carry out and continue to fulfill her constitutional duties. That is my priority, and I have been informed of the court’s decision on this matter,” he stated.
